The Science Of Creation

I apologise for the quality of posts so far.

11/22/09 09:13 pm - On the art of the 80's rock music film clip.

From Rage this weekend is this clip by the 80's new wave band The Cars. The song in the link is sung by the bass player Benjamin Orr, who as the more handsome singer of the band was assigned to sing the more romantic songs. This is because the usual singer and principal songwriter of the band looks like this.

11/11/09 03:15 pm - Candidates for dumbest thing on the internet; presenting YTMND.

My brother used to make YTMNDs. Some of you may know of this internet fad from hearing about/ experiencing someone who played this clip on repeat while writing up their honours thesis. Maybe you've seen this one, or you were involved one or several of the 3,208,774 views of this one. Or maybe you're above dumb stuff on the internet? My brother's first account name was 'Tehpwner'. When it was found that my brother had created multiple accounts, which was contrary to the rules of the site, this account and the others was banned. My brother then returned sneakily, forging a new alias and creating a new account name 'Tehpwner2'. The peak of Tehpwner2's art were these gems, the first one receiving over 70,000 views. My brother's notoriety is exemplified by this page, and by the 20 or so YTMNDs made about Tehpwner and Tehpwner2, such as these.

11/8/09 09:42 am - The one written the day before my thesis is due.

Is it just me, or is the punctuation at the end of this line the funniest thing I've ever done?!?!??!@#$%^&*()?

10/19/09 11:15 am - By which I am unconvinced\ldots

Highlight from last week's Rage:

10/8/09 05:13 pm - Should've I or should've I not?

This song should start at 4.04 and end at 4.32.

10/6/09 06:55 pm - The next one with the one-liner.

I read in the TV guide yesterday that the hype about the new TV show Flashforward claims that the show may just live up to the hype.

10/4/09 09:38 am - In which I disagree with the singer from the Living End.

This is the Living End song Raise The Alarm.

An extract of the awesome lyrics go

In the name of the father, the son,
And the holy ghost
I'm not concerned with religion
After all its what's inside that matters most.

I'm afraid that here Chris Cheney has missed the point again. What's inside is not what matters most. The point... )

10/4/09 09:11 am - In which Hareton is disrespectful.

In Emily Brontё's novel Wuthering Heights, there is a part where a middle-aged maid goes looking for her master's early-teenaged daughter who has run off for the day. She finds the daughter has gone to the farmhouse at Wuthering Heights, and has encountered her eighteen year old cousin. The older cousin is a bit uncouth, and doesn't really know how to talk respectfully to girls. When the girl mistakes the cousin for a servant, an exchange between the two goes as such -

"I'll see thee damned before I be thy servant!" growled the lad.
"You'll see me what?" asked Catherine in surprise.
"Damned - thou saucy witch!" He replied.

Indeed, if the lad had wanted to be more respectful, he would better have replied, "Damned, you sexy bitch."

9/28/09 10:22 am - In which I link to youtube.

This is a video of Muse on an Italian TV show playing their new single 'Uprising', a song which notably features reused chorus lyrics from 'Knights of Cydonia'. Apparently, the show forced them to use a full-backing track, so as a protest the members of the band switched instruments, unnoticed by anyone in the studio. The guy hamming it up on the drums is usually the lead guitarist/singer, the drummer has switched to bass/vocals (he is lip-syncing, the vocals you hear are the usual singer's), and the bass player is seen trying his hand at lead guitar/keyboards.

9/20/09 03:41 pm - In which I continue to post about music.

I have to say, Kanye West's latest song is one of the best songs of all time.

9/20/09 11:20 am - On the music on the tv.

Saturday mornings I sometimes enjoy the chance to watch rage. Last week's highlight was a live performance by the Beatles of 'I Saw Her Standing There'. This week's was probably 'She Drives Me Crazy' by the Fine Young Cannibals, featuring a guy with pillows strapped to falling over, trying to get up, and falling over again. While watching, I noticed this film clip bore a striking resemblance to Robert Palmer's 'Addicted To Love'. It turns out this is intentional. As an encore, I would like to remind everyone of this song.

I will note here that these clips also resemble the 'Addicted To Love' clip.

8/30/09 10:59 pm - On the music on the radio.

This is the intro line to "Best I Ever Had" by the rapper Drake. Don't look up the song, its not worth it.

You know a lot of girls be thinkin' my songs are about them
This is not to get confused, this one's for you
.

It is good that he has decided to make clear right off exactly who the song is about, thus avoiding considerable confusion. Way to be unambiguous, Drake.

8/15/09 09:35 am - In which I link to a webcomic.

Here I go setting another internet precedent.

I used to play this game.

8/14/09 09:19 am - In which I retell another joke.

Last night at dinner, the author responsible for MYBLOGISAFAIRBLOG was telling us a common Vietnamese joke, which he translated for us. It proceeded thus -
"What is the difference between a well-dressed man and a dog?" asks Sam.
"Dunno," is the reply from the table.
"Well, the well-dressed man, he has like a suit, with a coat, a tie, nice shoes et cetera. But the dog? Just pants."

8/5/09 07:22 pm - What is wrong with rappers?

This song Sexy Bitch by David Guetta featuring Akon has been a number one hit around the country. Here is an extract of the completely crazy lyrics:

She aint nothing a girl you've ever seen before, nothing you can compare to your neighborhood whore
I'm trying to find the words to describe this girl without being disrespectful

The way that booty movin i just cant take no more

Have to stop what I'm doing so I can pull her close
I'm trying to find the words to describe this girl without being disrespectful

(Damn Girl)

Chorus
Damn You's a sexy bitch, a sexy bitch
Damn you's a sexy bitch, damn girl
Damn You's a sexy bitch, a sexy bitch
Damn you's a sexy bitch, damn girl

I'm afraid that you have FAILED EPICALLY, sorry Akon.

8/1/09 09:50 pm - In which I post photos.

I have posted some photos of my holiday here. You can see them without having to make a Facebook account.

7/31/09 09:44 am - In which I instigate a new post paradigm by linking to youtube.

I think this song is funny, particularly the spaceship line:

7/30/09 11:21 am - The one for Chris.

On the family guy episode last night, Chris Griffin is in a car with some girl. After she turns on the radio, Chris comments "I don't like this radio station. They make outrageous claims that they don't deliver on... " Immediately on the radio we hear, "Radio 103.7, playing only the greatest rock and roll songs of all time," followed by the beginning line of "We Built This City" by Starship.

7/26/09 10:33 am - In which I retell a joke.

All good stories start in the following way, as does this one:

There were a few of us in the SLC, depressed over the imminent departure of Chris_The_Blogger into the grasping clutches of Eastern Europe. To cheers us up, new LJ user giskard88 told a joke, the setup of which proceeded thus - "What do Pakistani wives and American boyfriends have in common?" Our expectations of a geopolitically incorrect and probably racist and sexist double entendre were almost certainly justified by "They both shoot from 40,000 feet". Now, a double entendre is characterised by two contrasting interpretations, one innocent and mundane, the other risque and often sexually implicative. In the context of the above joke, two questions are raised - One, what is the first, innocent interpretation, and two, what is the other, more provocative meaning? Let this be pondered.

Ah, its good to be back.

7/23/09 11:18 am - I am told this is how to get a job.

I have been considering what I would like to do next year, after I have finished my honours degree. My main options seem to be: PhD here, PhD overseas, other research post overseas, something else over here. If my readers were to ask their siblings that work for or preferably own large companies to send me emails offering me work it would be appreciated. Actually though, if anyone has a good website for applied mathematics jobs, or some good graduate programs to apply for, or advice about good overseas posts, or any general advice that would also be appreciated.
